ICT Platform for Future Growth
This program aims to bring radio and television broadcasting to all citizens and communities in Papua New Guinea, ensuring access to news, information, and entertainment. The UAS Board and NICTA are using UAS Fund resources to bridge coverage gaps and assist low-income households, particularly in areas where the broadcasting market may not reach.
This program focuses on two key components:
- Providing financial support through the UAS Fund to enhance transmission towers and install antennae and related equipment. This expands the reach of radio and television broadcast signals into unserved and underserved areas.areas.
- NICTA collaborates with broadcasting entities to identify coverage gaps and develop investment plans for expanding broadcast networks into populated areas.
- Projects are designed to coordinate with mobile network infrastructure rollout for cost-effectiveness, aligning tower construction and equipment installation.
- Addressing the need for digital reception under new broadcasting standards by assisting households in acquiring digital TV set-top boxes.
- Recognizing the potential financial burden on low-income households, the UAS Board and NICTA are exploring subsidy projects to make these essential converters affordable.
- The goal is to ensure all households needing digital converters can obtain them promptly and affordably. NICTA will analyze needs and costs to develop the most cost-effective solutions.
