Livestock Traceability Project – 2018

Livestock Traceability Project – 2018

The NICTA UAS Livestock Trackability Project 2018 was a significant initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide in Papua New Guinea’s rural areas, specifically within the agricultural sector. Its core objective was to establish reliable broadband access network links to key institutions, enabling the trial implementation of a livestock traceability system using blockchain technology. This effort was designed to empower local farmers by providing them with access to vital online resources, including market information, farming techniques, banking services, and weather updates, ultimately fostering economic growth and improved living standards.

A key aspect of this project involved strategic partnerships with various organizations, including the Department of Agriculture & Livestock (DAL), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Jiwaka Provincial Government. These collaborations were crucial for the project’s success, ensuring that the infrastructure and services provided met the specific needs of the local communities. The focus on blockchain technology for livestock traceability highlighted a forward-thinking approach, aiming to enhance transparency and efficiency within the agricultural supply chain.

The project’s implementation, which included awarding internet connectivity provision to Emstret Holdings Limited, concentrated on establishing connectivity in the Jiwaka Province. This initiative, part of NICTA’s broader Universal Access and Services (UAS) programs, exemplifies the commitment to leveraging ICT to drive sustainable development in Papua New Guinea. By connecting farmers to essential information and technologies, the project sought to stimulate economic activity and improve the overall quality of life in rural communities.
